Van Cleef Arpels Alhambra vs. Heidi Klum Clover

As many of you may have figured out, I adore Van Cleef & Arpels even though these jewelry pieces literally cost an arm and a leg. I must be the only person on this planet not following Project Runway but I managed to sniff out Heidi Klum's jewelry line. They are savvy with simple classic lines. These are definitely a steal comparing to the VCA Alhambra jewelry line (launched in the early 1970's), which cost thousands per piece. Even a simple Alhambra ring will cost more than $2000.I can buy them and dispose of them within a season and not feel bad about it. I think the clover drop earrings are cute.
-earrings $115 at Project Runway
-cuff $275 at Project Runway
-ring $61 at QVC, there is a VCA ring almost exactly like it in different color enamel.

By the way, VCA is suing Ms. Klum for copyright infringement over her jewelry line. Her defense lawyer refuted stating like hearts and stars, clovers can't be a copyright. Ms. Klum claimed she got her inspiration while traveling in Italy. I can't help but think perhaps she might have gotten some of her inspiration from VCA after I saw the ring from QVC. So which is savvy for you?

  1. The Klum is SO much savvier! I love her stuff, haven't actually shelled out and purchased anything yet though. Definitely love the VCA too, but tis a bit out of the price range for the time being :)

  4. If Heidi has been wearing this pattern for years, sounds like infringement to me!

  8. Heidi all the way- I love her and her cute family. I bought the clover earrings she is wearing in your picture from QVC. Love them but they are a bit heavy feeling.

  11. I think Heidi copied it. Alhambra has been around since the 1970's.

  15. I am a fan of VCA. I will buy Heidi Klum's jewelry for fun but my passion will be wtih VCA Alhambra. I can see me passing VCA to my daughter but not the stuff I buy from QVC.

  16. Ugh, theres "inspired by" and then theres "direct copy."
This is too much the latter.

  18. They do look very similar to me. I have to say I always think of Heidi Klum when I see the clovers now because she has been wearing them for so long. I think VCA is out of luck because Klum has made them a recognizable part of her brand at this point. It'll be interesting to see how it all comes out, though! -Julia

The quatrefoil motif (what this type of stylized "clover" is technically called) is motif that has been used thorughout architectural and design history. The Gothic period is where it all started, and, there is an arguement that trefoils and quatrefoils symbolize christianity (hence their use on religious buildings- they hold great symbolism). No one has a corner on the quatrefoil, and its actually a very popular current and rather modern motif...it happens to be my favorite sape EVER! Anything with a quatrefoil on it- I love it! You would be surprised how often these turn up...all sorts of architecture, furniture, accessories...they are all over the Louis Vuitton monogram toile.

That being said, I feel Klums pieces are a bit too similar in styling to say they are not imitations. They are obviously not knockoff, trying to pass as VCA. Anyone who knows anything about VCA would know the different between a Heidi Klum piece and a true VCA piece. And, those who don't...well, they probably don't know what VCA is, anyways.

I vote VCA for most savvy, by the way. Its the most classic, its a great investment, the quality is amazing...and its just gorgeous. Savvy does not only mean reasonably priced!
